Dr. Girmay Berhie was a former dean/professor at Jackson State University (JSU) College of Health Sciences and currently serves as a professor and principal investigator of informatics and analytics. As a PI and CO-PI, he brought over $30 million in competitive grants within three to four years.
Dr. Berhie wrote a $10 million grant to develop and implement Informatics and Analytics Programs with a concentration in Bioinformatics, Data Science, Nursing Informatics, Business Analytics, Health Informatics, and Public Health Informatics. The Institution of Higher Learning (IHL), approved the six certificates and degrees in Informatics and Analytics, as well as NVIDID-AI. Additionally, he successfully implemented the HISTA program for high school students in the summer ($235,000).
On April 12, 2024, Dr.Berhie received the “Distinguished High Grant Award with a Plaque” for bringing the most significant and highest competitive grant for Jackson State University (JSU).
Dr.Berhie is a Co-PI of the Mississippi Delta Center of Excellence in Maternal Health (2023-2030) funded by NIH, which is $17.5 million. He was the former Director of West Virginia Statistical Center, where he successfully wrote and was awarded grant funds from the National Institute of Justice and the National Institute of Health. He was the project director, principal investigator, researcher, and independent evaluator for numerous NIH, NSF, ONC, DOL, NIJ, and SAMHSA grants. He has published articles in peer-reviewed journals and a book, “The Multi-Dimensional Development Evaluation Model: A Conceptual Schema for Evaluating Developmental Programs Proposed for Developing Countries,” published in 2012, and focuses on developing instruments for formative, process, and summative evaluation. He also wrote a chapter in the peer-reviewed book Health Informatics for the Curious: Why Study Health Informatics?
He has developed and implemented cross-campus opportunities among colleges as a founding chair and associate dean of undergraduate and graduate public health programs (CEPH accredited), founding chair of the Masters of Health Informatics (CAHIIM Accredited), nursing informatics certificate, and data analytics certificate, harnessing and/or using existing faculty from different colleges such as the College of Engineering and Computer Science, College of Science, College of Business, College of Health Profession, College of Medicine.
